Good Laptop Posture

Since I switched to a laptop from a desktop computer, my productivity has increased tremendously. But, working from a laptop greatly increases the risk of bad posture.

First, let’s cover what not to do. Looking down at a laptop screen causes terrible posture issues with our necks (see PICTURE 1 below). We may not notice it for years. But it’s definitely doing a number on us. The muscles in the front of your neck will compress and shorten. The muscles on the back of your neck will overextend and lengthen.

That said: Don’t look down at your laptop screen for long periods of time. Looking down at a laptop screen for long periods of time will cause spinal degeneration in the neck area (which is irreversible). This means the discs between the vertebrae become damaged by poor posture.

Correcting this problem takes a lot of body awareness. It’s a tricky problem to correct, because it may not even be painful. At least not for about 10 to 20 years. Then, one day you’ll sneeze and that’ll be the straw that broke the camel’s back. The intense pressure in your neck muscles builds up over the years and finally that simple sneeze, or maybe a hard step off of a curb, is all it takes to cause major injury to your neck/spine. That’s why it’s important for us to correct this problem ASAP.

Here’s Your Good Laptop Posture Tip:

Use an extended monitor with your laptop when sitting for long periods of time. This will allow you to look straight forward when viewing the top of your screen (see PICTURE 2 below). Looking down slightly to see the bottom of the extended monitor is OK. It doesn’t do nearly the damage to your neck that looking down at the laptop screen would do.

Practicing this tip will balance out the muscles in the front of your neck with the muscles in the back of your neck.  This will reduce unnecessary pressure on the discs and vertebrae in your neck and spine. It will lead to better posture and less pain, both over the short-term and long-term.
